The city of Anantapur is located in the westernmost part of the state of Andhra Pradesh, in the southern part of India. Anantapur is the largest district in the state of Andhra Pradesh, which spreads over an area of 19,130 square kilometers. Anantapur is the birth place of Sri Satya Sai Baba. Sri Satya Sai Baba is believed to be the rebirth of Shirdi Sai Baba. The home of Sri Satya Sai Baba, a place called Puttaparthi, is located in Anantapur. Anantapur is encircled by Kurnool on the north, by Cuddapah and Chittoor on the east and by the Karnataka State on the south and the west. Anantapur offers some convincing glimpses of the primeval past. It is believed that the place got its name from 'Anaatasagaram', a huge tank, which means 'Endless Ocean'. Anantapur is more familiarly known as 'Hande Anantapuram'. 'Hande' means the chief of the Vijayanagar period. A few other places along with Anantapur were gifted to Hanumappa Naidu of the Hande family by the Vijayanagar rulers.
