Anantapur offers some convincing glimpses of the primeval past. It is believed that the place got its name from 'Anaatasagaram', a huge tank, which means 'Endless Ocean'. A few other places along with Anantapur were gifted to Hanumappa Naidu of the Hande family by the Vijayanagar rulers.
