Raksha Bandhan is counted as one of the most important festivals of India that is celebrated largely by the Hindus. This festival celebrates the love of brothers and sisters. It strengthens the eternal bond of the siblings. The sisters tie rakhi or a holy thread on the wrist of the brothers. This holy festival is celebrated in the month of Shravana on the full moon according to the Hindu calendar.
Rakhi Mohotsavas was propagated by Rabindra Nath Tagore in Shantiniketan. It was started to propagate the feeling of brotherhood amongst people. It was started to initiate harmony among the people.
Also known as Nariyal Purnima in the Western Ghats, Avani Avittam in South India, Kajri Purnimaor Kajri Navami in North India, Rakhi and Pavitropana, this holy festial is celebrated all over the country with equal fun and enjoyment. The brothers and sisters wait for this day for the whole year. Like any other festivals of India, Raksha Bandhan is also incomplete without big family gathering and enjoyment. Raksha Bandhan celebrates the togetherness between the family members.
Raksha Bandhan is celebrated at the various pars of the country with the same excitement and vigor. The celebrations and customs vary from region to region but the spirit remains the same all over the country. The tradition holds that the sisters prepare thalis with various items like diya, roli, chawal and rakhis. The sisters bathe in the early morning and invoke the Gods and after that ties rakhi on the wrist of the brother and wishes for the well being of the brother. The brother in turn promises to protect the sisters from all odds. Gifts are exchanged between the sisters and brothers.
Tasty dishes are prepared on this day and sweets are distributed among the family members. The get together is very enjoyable for both the siblings and the other family members. Rakhi cards are also sent o the brothers if they are unable to make it on the Raksha Bandhan day. The shops remain filled with rakhi gifts and rakhis during the time of the festival. In short, Raksha Bandhan brings people together and unite people together.
