Viceroy Regal Simla which is known as the queen of hill stations houses various heritage and historic sites. Viceroy Regal - Lodge Simla is one of the prominent heritage and historic sites in India which is worth paying a visit.

Located on the Observatory Hill of Shimla, this heritage building was once the residence of Viceroy of India Lord Dufferin. Viceroy Regal - Lodge Simla , popularly known as British Viceroy's residence is an example of fine Elizabethan style of architecture. Henry Irvine has also made significant contribution in designing of the building.

The Viceroy Regal - Lodge Simla with its Elizabethan style structure was constructed in 1880. Woods were imported from Burma to adorn the interiors of the building. Woods like pine and cedar were used to construct this architecture. With the passage of time the glamour of the building is as the same as it was during the time of construction. It cost around 36 Lakh Rupees for constructing the Regal Lodge.

Viceroy Regal - Lodge Simla has a historical importance of its own to boast of. Several historic events took inside the walls of the historic building. The decision of the partition of India was taken by Nehru, Jinnah and Mountbatten in the conference room of the regal lodge. The Shimla in the year 1945 also took place in this lodge.

There is also a library in Simla Viceroy Regal - Lodge where you get books on Indian history. Elaborate security arrangements including fire alarm was installed in the Lodge in the last part of the 17th Century. From the balconies of the lodge you can catch a panoramic vista of the Simla mountain ranges which remain clad in snow.

Viceroy Regal Lodge in Simla is surrounded by pine trees, maidenhair tree, white mulberry and Japanese maple and gardens on all the sides. At present the Viceroy Regal Lodge houses the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies. The lodge remains open from 9am to 8.30 pm.
