Zanskar in Jammu and Kashmir is located in a high altitude and experiences a cold semi desert type of climate. Zanskar is located on the Northern part of the Great Himalayan Range. Previously, Zanskar was a part of Ladakh and experiences a cold desert type climate. There are very scanty snowfall and rainfall. It is the mountain ranges that act as a barrier for the monsoon. But there is increase in the amount of precipitation in the recent years. The houses are well adapted to the temperature and climate of the region. The winters are very harsh and chilly cold.

Here, you can spot various categories of floras and faunas. The vegetations are found in the lower valley areas of Zanskar. Most of the flora and vegetation is of the alpine and tundra species. The meadows are covered with edelweiss. Blue poppies are commonly found in foot hill. This offers a breathtaking view and draws in thousands of travelers. Various crops are also grown, which include barley, lentils and potatoes. Apricot trees are also found in this region. People domesticate animals like yak, sheep, horse, and dog are found in the region. You can also spot some wild animals amidst their natural environment. At Zanskar, you can find the marmot, bear, wolf, snow leopard, kiang, bharal, alpine Ibex, wild sheep and goats and the lammergeier.
