Amritsar Sahib is a major pilgrimage and religious sites for the Sikhs from all over the country. This holy place is gathered pilgrims from all over the world every year to pay their homage to the great Sikh gurus. Amritsar Sahib is truly an enchanting sight that stands amidst the square tank of holy water, which is known as the Tank of Nectar or amrit. Coming to this site, you will definitely come close to God and will remain overwhelmed by the peacefulness and serenity that marks this place.
To get in to the complex of the Amritsar Sahib or Harmandir Sahib, you can find four gateways, which signifies that this religious site is open top people coming from four corners of the world. Each side of the site measures about 150 meters in length. The temple complex is connected to the shrine by a 60 meters causeway. This path is also beautifully adorned with marble railing and rows of gilded lamps to illuminate it during night.
Lots of people flocks to this religious site to see the magnificence of the temple itself. The temple is covered with plates of gold, which shines brilliantly both during day and night. Once you cross the causeway, you will come across several important parts, which are dedicated to the Sikh Gurus. The Darshani Deori is a fine arch area that gives you the full view of Harmandir Sahib. The temple rests on a base and the whole dome with gilded. Some of the doors, domes and walls are also covered with gold. It is for this reason that it is commonly known as the Golden Temple.
Within the temple, you can hear the reading of the holy book Guru Granth Sahib. The book is read everyday in the name of God. You can also find more than 100 hand written copies of manuscripts in the Sikh Reference library attached to the Amritsar Sahib. The Gurbanis, which are sung in the temple premises, will surely give u a religious feeling. It will transport you to a different world. Amritsar Sahib also has Guru Ram Das langar hall, Akal Takhat, which are some of the major parts of the temple and has great religious importance.
