With the months left for Commonwealth Games 2010 to go, the New Delhi government is racing against time to develop sports venues and civic infrastructure to prepare for the mega event. Although India has been a two-time host of Asian Games, the Commonwealth Games are being held first time in India. The Organizing Committee together with Government and other agencies are working hard to spruce up the sprawling capital city in time for the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
To accommodate the athletes and officials during Commonwealth Games 2010, New Delhi Games Village is being built. Ideally located in the heart of Delhi, the site of the Games Village is close to many renowned monuments and landmarks like Humayun's Tomb, Lotus Temple and Akshardham Temple. Situated on the banks of holy River Yamuna, the Games Village is surrounded by idyllic and picturesque setting. It will surely offer a relaxing and soothing environment to the athletes.
The building is being built by Delhi Development Authority (DDA) at a cost of $230 million. It will be a low-rise structure spread over an area of 63.5 hectares with a capacity to accommodate 8500 athletes and supporting staff. According to the official projections, the Games Village is expected to be completed by December 2009.
The Organizing Committee of Commonwealth Games will not bear any cost of construction as the Games Village has been underwritten by Government of India. Athletes and officials of all sports will stay at this Village. Ultimate world class facilities will be provided to the guests to make their stay comfortable and memorable.
The development of the Games Village is in full swing and the according to Government sources will finish by December 2009. Once completed, the Games Village will be something completely unique in New Delhi and even in India.
