Commonwealth Games is a multi-national multi-sport event held every 4 years involving athletes of the Commonwealth Nations. The history of sports can be traced back as far as 1891 when Rev. Astley Cooper proposed “Pan-Britannic Pan-Anglican Contest and Festival” in an article in The Times to maintain goodwill and understanding of the British Empire. An sports event “Festival of the Empire” was held in London in 1911 on the occasion of coronation of King George V. A century has witnessed this festival turning into a gala event and a saga of sports. As India hosts the 2010 Commonwealth Games, there is much about the event worth distinguishing.
