With its elements of modern infrastructure in place such as rapid transit, state-of-the-art highways and pollution checks, New Delhi is undergoing a fast-paced facelift to prepare for the 2010 Commonwealth Games. The Government of India is pouring in approximately $17.5 bn for the development of public transport, new power plants, water utility services, Games Village and overall beautification of the city. There is large plans underway to construct road and rail-based mass transit systems for commonwealth games 2010.

Transport

Road
New bridges, cloverleafs and flyovers are under construction to provide intra-city connectivity as well as access to sports venues, Games Village, hotels and hospitals. Road-widening initiatives are also in process with special emphasis on expansion of national highways. Signal-free inner and outer Ring roads are also envisaged by the planners. A 4-lane, 2.2-km long underground stretch from Ring Road to Lodhi is proposed which will link Games Village to the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and reduce traveling time for athletes by 6 minutes.

Mass Rapid Transport
For meeting commitment to mass transportation, 9 corridors are being constructed as High Capacity Bus Systems, 6 of these corridors are supposed to be operational this year. In addition Delhi Mass Rapid Transit System also known as Delhi Metro is being expanded to accommodate more people during the 2010 games. By 2010 DMRTS will be the second longest network in the world and later the longest with than 420 km of network.

Air Travel
Air travel is not missed keeping in view the major influx of sport buffs will commute via this medium. Indira Gandhi International Airport is being given entire facelift. A new two tier terminal (Terminal 3), with bottom area for arrivals and top floor for departures, will be constructed by 2010 games. With 30 parking bays, 130 check-in and 72 immigration counters, 55 aero-bridges, 15 X-ray screening chambers and many more other amenities, this Terminal will be one of the most ultra modern in the world. The airport will be connected to the city via a 6-lane highway (NH8) and Delhi Metro.
