Dr Sampoornanand Jayanti marks the birthday of the noted laureate and educationist from Uttar Pradesh. This festival is celebrated on January 1, 2023. Died in the year 1969, Dr Sampoornanand served as Chief Minister of the state, played the role of a teacher, freedom fighter, and cultural enthusiasts. His life was an inspiration to many even today. In commemoration of his birthday, the January 1 every year has cultural celebrations in various parts of Varanasi.

About Dr Sampoornanand 

Born in a rigid Hindu society, Sampoornanand emerged as a scholar in Sanskrit and astronomy. His devoted his life for the Indian Independence movement. Joining the Non-cooperation Movement was a major turning point in his life. A teacher throughout his life, journalism interested Sampoornanand and he started the editing work of a Hindi daily Maryada. Gerring invoved in active politics came in the year 1922 with his joining the All-India Congress Committee.

Fighting the state elections in 1954, he became the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and served until 1960. As his tenure as CM, he promoted Hindi, Sanskrit, and other cultural subjects in the state. For its varied initiatives in promoting art and culture, he was appointed the first chairperson of Varanasi Lalit Kala Akademi in February 1962.

Resigning from the post of chief minister, he led his strong movement against life imprisonment of convicts. He voiced the idea of an open prison and that came into existence in 1963 in the state of Rajasthan. It became a reformation center for the convicts. The jail was named Sri Sampurnanand Khula Bandi Shivir.

The Sampurananand Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya University in Varanasi is a foremost center where Dr Sampoornanand Jayanti is celebrated. To commemorate the occasion, State Lalit Kala Akademi, where he was the first chairperson has speeches and garland ceremony.
