The Bohaggiyo Bishu Festival is celebrated in the state of Assam in northeast India. The Bohaggiyo Bishu Festival is the most becharming spring festival of the tribe called Deoris. The Deoris are one of the four segmentations of the ‘Chutiyas’. The Chutiyas are assumed to have been members of the great Boro race of people. Probably the term ‘Bishu’ have initiated from the Chutiya word ‘Bishu’, where “Bi” means extreme and “Su” means rejoicing.

Description of Bohaggiyo Bishu Festival:

The Bohaggiyo Bishu Festival in Assam is just like all other tribal festivals in spring and is celebrated with unhindered joy and merriment. It is an important fact that it is customary that a ‘Than Puja” would predate the Bihus and unmistakably it must start on Wednesday.

There is a big ritual which is followed during the Festival of Bohaggiyo Bishu in Assam. Also there is a lot of socio-religious importance and preparations to be made before the main puja. Once in every four years a white buffalo is sacrificed in the puja, which is considered as a replacement for the proper traditional human sacrifice.

Another noteworthy and most important part of the Bohaggiyo Bishu Festival is the Deodhani dance. The Carol Song Party or the ‘Husori’ is the other main attraction. The Bohaggiyo Bishu Festival is celebrated in many places like Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Sibsagar, and Nagaon. These places remain the centre of attraction during the celebration of this festival.

Similar to all other springtime festivals of the tribal people, the Assam Bohaggiyo Bishu Festival is observed during the middle of April. The Bohaggiyo Bishu Festival of Assam goes on for seven days at a stretch, when people enjoy to the fullest.
