The Bihu Festivals are the national festivals of Assam, a north-eastern state in India. The Rangali Bihu Festival is also known as ‘Bohaag Bihu’ and is considered as the Festival of Merriment. The Rangali Bihu Festival in Assam is celebrated to mark the beginning of the New Year, which is the time of sowing seeds. The Assam Rangali Bihu Festival is the spring time Bihu and has sub-divisions as well. The first day of Festival Rangali Bihu in Assam is called the Garu Bihu, when bull and cows are bathed with turmeric, fed with gourds and brinjals and provided with new attaching ropes. The second day of the Rangali Bihu festival is called the Manush Bihu, when men, women and children put on new clothes. Special dishes are prepared at every home for feasts and destitutes receive contributions from the well-off people. During the Assam Rangali Bihu Festival, people visit their friends and relatives with food items and gifts. The close relatives and friends are also gifted with hand-woven scarves.
The Rangali Bihu Festival is just a part of the Bihu Festival of Assam which continues for seven days. Apart from the feasts and other features, the main attraction of the festival is the Bihu Dancing, during which visitors are served with rice-beer.
