Dhanteras
Dhanteras is the first day of the Diwali celebration. The day signifies the worship of the Goddess of Wealth, Goddess Lakshmi. The day bears a great significance in the festival calendar of India. This festival is an integral part of the religious tradition of the country. It is celebrated in various parts of the country among the Hindu community.
Dhanteras involves a number of customs and rituals to be performed. These rituals are performed with a lot of respect among the Hindu community. The rituals include drawing small foot prints of Goddess Lakshmi with rice and flour. The rituals also include buying items made gold, silver. Buying utensils on the eve of Dhanteras is also regarded very auspicious. People also sing devotional songs and offer sweets to the goddess. They also decorate their houses with lights to mark the arrival of Goddess Lakshmi. Moreover, some of the places in south India follow the ritual of cow worship on this day. It is done as for farmers, cows signify wealth and it is believed that cows signify wealth.
