Historical Significance and Origins

The Nehru Connection

In 1952, India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru visited Alappuzha with his daughter Indira Gandhi and grandchildren Rajiv and Sanjay. It was originally organized to welcome the Prime Minister, but it became legendary when Nehru jumped into the winning snake boat, Nadubhagam Chundan, overwhelmed by the excitement. There was loud clapping on the banks of the lake, and the rhyme and rhythm of Vanchipattu (boat songs) filled the entire atmosphere.

Trophy and Legacy

On his return to New Delhi, Nehru ordered the manufacture of a silver trophy bearing his autograph, naming the race the Prime Minister’s Trophy. This trophy is made of pure silver and shaped like a snake boat.

The Magnificent Snake Boats (Chundan Vallam)

The magnificent snake boats (Chundan Vallam) are typically around 100 to 140 feet in length. Skilled boat builders spend a great deal of time constructing these boats. They showcase the brilliance of craftsmanship. Physical Specifications:
  • Length: 100-140 feet (30-42 meters)
  • Height: Rear portion rises to about 20 feet from water level
  • Hull Construction: Built of planks precisely 83 feet in length and six inches wide
  • Materials: Primary wood is Anjili (Artocarpus hirsutus), known for water resistance and durability

Crew Composition and Roles

A traditional snake boat accommodates 64 paddlers (representing 64 art forms) or occasionally 128 paddlers, sitting two to a row along the boat’s length. The crew structure includes: Crew Details:
  • Total Capacity: 100-150 rowers, including drummers and singers
  • Main Paddlers: 64 or 128 paddlers rowing in rhythm to Vanchipattu
  • Singers: Around 25 singers positioned in the middle between paddlers
  • Leadership: Commanded by a village leader (kaarnavan) with three main paddlers controlling movement using a 12-foot-long main rudder-oar
  • Platform Team: Eight people stand on a platform representing Ashtadikpalakas (gods guarding eight directions)
