History of Gandhinagar

History of Gandhinagar

Gandhinagar got its name from the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhinagar is the capital city of Gujarat and is an important city in Gujarat in India. At a distance of 32 kilometers towards north east from Ahmadabad lies Gandhinagar. Gandhinagar is situated on the west bank of river Sabarmati.

History of Gandhinagar states that the city was established around 1960. The city got an identity of its own when the state of Mumbai was divided into two separate states of Gujarat and Maharashtra. Mumbai since then became a part of Maharashtra and Gandhinagar became a part of Gujarat as a state. Gandhinagar emerged as the new capital for the state of Gujarat as the situation demanded for a new capital city.

Gandhinagar’s history boasts of its status as city which held a great importance during the struggle for the nation’s independence. Mahatma Gandhi belonged to this place and the historical background of Gandhinagar proves the point that many national movements which were planned to gain the nation’s freedom started from Gandhinagar.

The History of Gandhinagar in Gujarat in India also states that the political plans of the country and the state were to make the city of Gandhinagar an Indian enterprise. The reason behind such an idea was to give the city a more prominent identity on the national and international level as the birth place of Mahatma Gandhi.

Later plans to design this city in collaboration with Le Corbusier ensured the fact that Gandhinagar will be designed and built in a way that will portray the Gandhian philosophy of using Swadeshi goods and the Swaraj that is the self rule would prevail.
