Junagadh in Gujarat located at the foothills of the Girnar Hills is one of the most important pilgrim points of the Jains. Some of the Archeological remains found in the outskirts of the city like the 14 rock edifice in Brahmi script bears testimony to the fact that the city came into being during the times of Ashoka. Its political history on the whole had been one of acquisition and uncertainty. It was a reigning seat of the Mauryan and the Gupta dynasty and later on passed on to the Chudasama Rajputs who ruled here from the 9th to the 15th century until in the Middle ages the Muslim took over.
