The Vadodara history can be traced back to more than 2000 years. It was under the rule of Babi Nawabs before Gaekwars took over the charge. The Babi Nawabs were the officers of the Delhi rulers. However with the end of the Mughal rule in 1732, the Maratha activities were introduced in Southern Gujarat by the Pilaji Rao Gaekwar to head the town.

However it is found that the present name Baroda is derived from the name Brodera coined by the early English travelers and merchants. Nevertheless, this name was again changed to Vadodara in 1974.
