Tashigang Gompa

Tashigang Gompa is a fine Buddhist monastery in the state of Himachal Pradesh. The monastery is situated on National Highway 22, at the confluence of the Satluj and Spiti rivers in Lahaul and Spiti district of the state. Dotted with rocky hills and snow covered peaks, Lahaul and Spiti are two isolated Himalayan valleys of Himachal Pradesh lying on the Indo-Tibet border. Lahaul, a land of enchanting Buddhist art and culture, is marked by imposing mountains and glaciers. Spiti is renowned as Little Tibet since its landscape, vegetation, and climate are akin to that of Tibet.

Beautifully painted murals, stuccos and elaborate thangkas framed with rich borders of silk adorn the interiors of Tashigang Gompa.

There are two gompas in this ancient monastery - old and the new. The new gompa is exceptionally beautiful, decked with lovely wall paintings, small collection of books on Buddhism, Buddhist statues and a big Tibetan drum. The old gompa is situated few houses below the new gompa. At the old gompa you will see a statue of the Shakyamuni Buddha.

Though the new gompa does not remain open at all times, the old gompa does. A number of devotees throng the old gompa to offer prayers. Tashigang Gompa is conveniently accessible from Namgya in Kinnaur district, by taking diversion from Khab and then trekking to the monastery. The nearest airport is at Bhuntar. The closest broad gauge railhead is at Chandigarh, while the nearest narrow gauge railway station is at Joginder Nagar.
