Bhimkali Temple

The temples of Himachal Pradesh are famous for a number of reasons. Some are popular for their idols, while others are known for their architecture and legends. The splendid temples in this state attract both domestic and international tourists. Bhimakali Temple is a masterpiece in the Himalayan region. The architecture of the temple and the legends associated with it make it worth visiting. It is located at Sarahan, a scenic hill station in the state. The presiding deity here is Bhimakali, a manifestation of the goddess Durga. It is one of the revered shaktipeeth in Himachal Pradesh. According to legend, Sati's ear is said to have fallen at this site. The Bhimkali Temple is around 180 km from Shimla and accessible from Kinnaur district.

This 800 year old temple is an architectural wonder. It is a perfect blend of Hindu and Buddhist styles of architecture, with beautifully crafted doors and slanting wooden roofs. The temple complex includes three other structures - temples dedicated to Lord Raghunathji, Narsinghji and Patal Bhairvaji. The idol of the main deity, goddess Bhimakali, is housed on the second floor of the main temple. The surrounding region is also stunningly beautiful. Various species of flora and fauna attract visitors from far and near.

Legends of Bhimakali Temple

There are several legends surrounding Bhimkali Temple:

• According to one legend, the temple belonged to the Bushair rulers from Rampur in Shimla.
• It is also believed that the temple tilted by a few inches during the earthquake of 1905. However, it got straightened by another tremor!
• Another legend mentions a secret tunnel inside the temple premises.
• The demon king Banasur, the ruler of Shontipur (now called Sarahan), is buried at the entrance where there is a raised platform.

How to reach Bhimakali Temple

From Shimla, you can drive to Sarahan covering a distance of 175 km. The hill station of Sarahan is also accessible from Fagu, Theog, Rampur and Jeori. It is 17 km uphill from Jeori. You will get to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Himalayan forests during your journey here.

Festivals at Bhimakali Temple

Bhimakali Temple celebrates Navratras twice a year during the months of April and October. Udyapan Jag is celebrated once in about 100 years. It was last held in 1904.
