Chamunda Devi Temple

The name Chamunda is a combination of Chand and Mund, the two monsters killed by the Devi (goddess) in rage. Chamunda Devi is associated with the Hindu goddess Kali, a manifestation of Parvati or Durga. Chamunda Devi Temple located in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh is among the popular Hindu shrines in this state. It is around 15 km from Dharamshala and 24 km from the Kangra town. It is renowned for its architecture, grand interiors and images of the deities. The chief deity in this shrine is Rudra Chamunda, the wrathful image of Durga.

Legends of Chamunda Devi Temple

The most popular legend is about the battle between the gods and demons when goddess Chamunda was born to kill the two demons, Chand and Mund. Originally, this temple is said to be located in a remote spot. With the prayers of the king, the goddess gave permission for relocation of the temple and directed him about an idol to be kept in the shrine of the new temple. Tourists see the same idol in the sanctum even today.

Chamunda Devi Temple is around 10 km from Palampur and easily accessible by bus. You can also reach this place from Dharamshala that is around 15 km away.
