Renuka Lake

Renuka Lake Himachal Pradesh is a study in natural contrasts. Along with the freezing water of the Alpine lakes you also get to see here the hot springs. Some of these lakes dates back to million of years, others are relatively new. Some have mythical implication while others are enjoyed just for the heck of it.

Renuka Lake is situated in the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh and is considered to be the largest natural lake reservoir in Himachal Pradesh. With a circumference of 1214 meters, this lake is named after the deity Renuka , who happens to be Prashuram's mother in Hindu folklore mythology.

Renuka Lake takes the shape of a reclining woman. Pilgrims from all part of India gather here to light lamps in the holy water of the lake. A smaller lake lies at the foot of the main lake. The Lake is bounded by an Alpine valley on all sides.

A quaint temple dedicated to Renuka lies at some distance away from the Renuka Lake. This ancient temple is believed to be a specimen of the eighteenth century. Every year in November an annual fair is held with pomp and gaiety. If you are adventurous you can always try out boating in the lake. There is a mini zoo and a lion sanctuary situated close by the Renuka Lake.
