Ranikhet means “Queen’s Meadow.” According to a local legend, the town was named after Rani Padmini. The queen who came here in the course of journey, was so enchanted by the beauty of the land that she decided to settle down here. In 1869 the British selected it to be their cantonment. Ranikhet is one of the oldest cantonments in the country.
