Varkala is a small town whose western boundary is marked by the renowned Papanasam beach. The red laterite cliff lies adjacent to the beach. The cliff extends for about two kilometres. The surging cliffs, the abysmal sea beyond and the greens groves make Varkala, a popular tourist destination. The handicrafts, jewellery and food stalls dotted along the serene beach adds flavor to the relaxing atmosphere.
The model time to visit the beach is between the months of March and November. During this period the weather is not very warm but extremely pleasant with mild surfs and pleasing sunshine.
