Ooty or Udagamandalam is rightly described as "Queen of Hill Stations" by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Ooty spreads over an area of 36 sq km with a number of high buildings cluttering up its hilly slopes. The city is situated at an elevation of 2,240 meters above sea level. Ooty still attracts tourists from all over India as well as foreign countries right through summer, and sometimes in the winter months too. An additional attraction for the tourists to Ooty is the train journey through the mountains on a ratchet and pinion trail which begins from Kallar, near Mettupalayam and moves its way through several spine-tingling curves and scary tunnels.
The exotic locales of Ooty have been a favorite stomping ground of honeymooners. Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary, which has been renamed as Jayalalitha Wildlife Sanctuary National Park is about 67 kilometers from Ooty. The park is home to a number of animals that include Nilgiri langur, hyena, wild dogs, gaur, jackal and sloth bear. But elephants are the treasured attraction of the park. Mukurti Peak, about 36 kilometers from Ooty is an ideal place to visit. The tourists can enjoy fishing and boating at the Mukerti Lake.
