Katra is deemed a holy city owing to the presence of the shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi. The city therefore has some traits unique to it, but commonly to be found in the Indian pilgrimage spots. To begin with, non-vegetarian food is not allowed within the limits of the Katra city. Secondly, the uphill walk covering 13 km takes one to the shrine of Vaishno Devi.
