Introduction: Pathanamthitta is a combination of two Malayalam words Pathanam and Thitta, which means Houses by Riverside, though it is a landlocked district of Kerala!

  • Pandalam- A sleepy town, which turns hyperactive during the pilgrimage season of Sabarimala. It is the birthplace of Lord Ayyapa.

  • Sabarimala- It is the abode of Lord Ayappa,914 metre above sea level and 191 km from Trivandrum.

  • Pamba- During the Festival of Lamp in Makaramin the month of January- February more than 3000 pilgrims take a dip in the river to purge themselves.

  • Kozhenchery: It is 13 km from Pathanamthitta,on the banks of Pampa River. The famous Maramon Convention takes place here, annually. This convention is the biggest religious gathering of the Christians in Asia.

  • Thiruvalla: Thiruvalla is the largest town in Pathanamthitta district. Malankara Marthoma Syrian Church's headquarter is here. The exquisite mural paintings in the Paliakara church here, is also an add-on attraction. The 4000-year old Sree Vallabh temple here is the only Hindu shrine in Kerala offering Kathakali (a folk dance) as a daily ritual to the deity.

  • Sree Vallabba Temple: Kathakali is performed daily at night as an offering to the main deity. Non-Hindus are also allowed here to watch the performance.

  • Kaviyoor: Situated 5 km away from Thiruvalla on the banks of Manimala river, here the main deity is Hanuman. About 1.5 km away from Kaviyoor temple, there is a rock cut temple of 8th century origin. The stone figures engraves are specimens of Stone culture. This temple is preserved as a historical monument by the Archaeological Department of India.
