Katra is famous primarily as the holy town where the Goddess Vaishno Devi resides. The cave shrine of Mata Vasihnodeviji or Trikuta Bhagwati is at an altitude of 5,200 ft. The shrine can be reached either on foot, on horseback, by auto or helicopter. A 13 km uphill walk takes the pilgrims to the shrine. A steep staircase can also be taken as short cut, but that makes the journey more stressful. It is advisable to take the stairs on downhill journey way back.
