City Info :
It is believed that after 250 years of the Buddha's attaining Enlightenment, Emperor Asoka visited Bodh Gaya and is considered to be the founder of the original Mahabodhi temple. The original temple consisted of an elongated spire crowned by a miniature stupa and a chhatravali on a platform. Some historians believe that the original temple was constructed or renovated in the 1st century during the Kushan period but with the decline of Buddhism in India, the temple was abandoned and forgotten, and got buried under layers of soil and sand only to be excavated and restored under the supervision of Alesander Cunningham with assistance from J. D. Beglar and Dr Rajendralal Miitra.
