There is a legend that Muhammad Quli of Hyderabad fell in love and married a local Banjara girl called Baghmati. The city was consequently named after her, Bhagyanagaram; but since she married a Muslim she was converted to Islam and gained the new name Hyder Mahal; since then the name Hyderabad came into being.
