Matheran is perched on the hilltop at a height of 800 m, and the journey to the place is an exciting two hour climb in a toy train. The train passes through the dense forest, whispering trees and the incredible height of the Matheran's cliffs. The air is clean and fresh as the route takes you far from the madding crowd. The toy train serves food and drinks.The Matheran Railway links Neral, which lies on the Mumbai- Pune route. The route is scattered with beautiful vistas where peace and calmness prevails all around.
A heritage railway of Maharashtra, India, the Matheran Hill Railway was built between 1901 and 1907 by Abdul Hussein Adamjee Peerbhoy. The cost of the railway was Rs.16, 00, 000. A distance of 20 kms is covered as the train travels over large acres of forest territory that connects Neral to Matheran. It is a 610 mm (2 ft) narrow gauge railway. Neral has a broad gauge station located on the busy Mumbai-Pune route. The railways are managed by the Central Railways and are being endorsed as a future World Heritage Site.
