The scrub forests towards the eastern limits of the park are comprised of small trees, interspersed with bushes and open lush green patches. Towards its northwestern edge, there is a measured shift in the plants from open dry deciduous forests to tropical mixed deciduous forests. These diverse habitats support an enormous diversity of animal life.
When Bandipur begins to open out in all its beauty the birds begin their breeding activities. The air becomes filled with their melodious calls. Sprouting grass in the meadows and view lines attract elephants. The backwaters of the Kabini Reservoir in the northwestern portion of the park host huge flock of large mammals. This unique feature makes a breathtaking sight, and is nearly the only one of its kind in Asia.
