Porbandar Bird Sanctuary is positioned in the heart of Porbandar city, the birth place of Mahatma Gandhi, who preached and practiced non-violence all through his life. Spread on an area of about 1 sq. km, this sanctuary provides the much needed legal protection to various species of birds. Inside this sanctuary, there is also a lake which draws a steady count of migratory birds. Any tourist visiting Mahatma’s birth-place should not let go off the opportunity of visiting this sanctuary. Porbandar Bird Sanctuary has the distinction of being the only bird sanctuary of the State. Tourists availing of rail transport may use the rail head of Porbandar, 5 kms from here while air-travelers can use the closest airport of Porbandar located 5 kms away. As the place is quite well linked via road too, travelers taking the road to Porbandar Bird Sanctuary would have no problem to reach here. The best time to visit this place is during the months of winter. Tourists coming here may stay at the various hotels in and around Porbandar.
Porbandar Bird Sanctuary Porbandar, Gujarat is not enriched in terms of plant life. Unfortunately, you won’t find any emergent vegetation at this place. However, some trees could be seen which were planted by the Forest Department. In fact, this sanctuary is quite popular for its rich bird life.
