Ever since the park gained the status of a National Park in 1995, stringent conservation measures have been taken to ensure the overall protection of the flora and fauna in Kanha. This has resulted in the park's gaining the reputation of being one of the best maintained National Parks in Asia.

Kanha National Park supports about 22 species of mammals in its central parkland and the adjoining plateaus. The density of fauna in Kanha is so high that no other wildlife reserve in India can match the same.
