Fauna in Kanha

The Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh is renowned worldwide as one of the finest and richest National Parks in India. The enchanting scenic beauty, coupled with the rich and varied flora and fauna in Kanha, has made the park a much sought-after destination for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts from around the world.

Ever since the park gained the status of a National Park in 1995, stringent conservation measures have been taken to ensure the overall protection of the flora and fauna in Kanha. This has resulted in the park’s gaining the reputation of being one of the best maintained National Parks in Asia.

Kanha National Park supports about 22 species of mammals in its central parkland and the adjoining plateaus. The density of fauna in Kanha is so high that no other wildlife reserve in India can match the same.

The most prominent among the Fauna in Kanha National Park, Madhya Pradesh is the TIGER. Kanha is the perfect place to spot this ferocious beast, roaming freely in the wilderness of the jungles. There are several Tiger Reserves in India, but nowhere can you see tigers as often, and as regularly as in Kanha Tiger Reserve.

With a little luck, you can even spot the near-extinct hard-ground Swamp Deer (‘Barasingha’) – unique to the Kanha national park only. Apart from tiger, the diverse fauna in Kanha also comprise other species like Leopards, Gaur, Sambar, Chausinghas (four-horned antelope), Nilgais, Sloth Bears, Barking Deer, Blackbuck, Common Langur, Gray Langurs, Wild Boars, Porcupines, Mouse Deer, Hyenas, Jackals, Wild Dogs (Dholes), Mongoose, Jungle Cat, Chittal and Wild Pig.

The reptilian fauna in Kanha Wildlife Reserve consist of Monitor Lizards, Pythons and a wide variety of snakes.
