Conservation History of Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary
Lying on the northern and north-western side of the Nilgiris, Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary acts as a borderline between the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. This sanctuary is regarded as the first reserved forest of South India. It nestles to numerous species of plants and animals. Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary is famous for its birds. Established in 1940 the sanctuary is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Though smaller in size compared to other nearby wildlife reserves but still can compete with others in terms of the flora and fauna found there.
The total land area of the park in the beginning was about 60 sq km which was later on expanded to 295 sq km in 1956 and subsequently to its present size of 321 sq km. This sanctuary shares its boundaries with Wayanad Sanctuary, Sigur and Singara reserve forests and is an extension of Bandipur National Park.
