Location: Sultanpur National Park is 50 km from Delhi and 15 km from Gurgaon on the Gurgaon- Farukh Nagar Road. It is also known as Haryana's Bird Paradise.
Geology and Climate:Sultanpur National Park was described by eminent naturalist M. Krishnan as a sheet of shallow water if not rained merely dries up in winter. It is characterized by hot summers and chilly winters. During dry spells in winter the authorities used artificial means to keep the lake alive by pumping water from other sources like the Yamuna River.
Important Activities carried out by the Forest Department:
Construction of boundary wall along the periphery of the Park to check influx of domestic animal and out flux of wild animals. Construction of path and bird watching points to give better view of the birds.
Releasing fish eggs in the lake to feed birds.
Facilities at Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary
Dr. Salim Ali Centre established in honor of the renowned ornithologist has photographs, write ups, a bit of history and some of his belongings displayed.
Tall Watch towers have been erected to give better view of the Park.
Education and Interpretation Centre has attractive photographs of birds and interesting write ups.
Importance of Sultanpur National Park:
Out of 250 species of birds sighted in Sultanpur National Park around 150 species of birds are resident birds. So it is home to large number of migratory a well as non-migratory birds. Migratory birds star arriving in September and stays till March-April, until it gets warmer and snow begins to melt up-North. The Grand Sarus Cranes also breed during July-August. It is also home to some large antelope like hog deer and Nilgai.
