Panna National Park is home to numerous variety of flora and fauna. It is famous for the big wild cat or the famous Tiger. As a matter of fact, this reserve was declared a Project Tiger Reserve in 1994,the 22nd in the country and 5th in the State. The diversity in habitat has allowed the population of different animals to sustain their life easily in these forests. This reserve has got a good population of leopards and elephants as well. but the ‘big cat’ rules here. With a close proximity to Khajuraho the forest has developed itself as an important place to visit.
The National Park is a perfect site for Ecotourism where the populace of the forest sustain their life in a very natural way. It is easier to promote and preserve the wildlife and its habitat for key sustainable development in forest like Panna. The abundance of flora and fauna strikes the perfect balance for ecological development.
The reserve is situate on both sides of river Ken which flows from south to north of the forest. The soil of the forest consists of the typical Vindyan soils coupled with patches of dry land. The typical hot and dry climate of the place has paved the way for the forest type consisting of dry teak and dry mixed forest. Also dry deciduous forest and grassland are a part of the vegetation.
The avian population counts to about 200 different species with a healthy number being of the Migratory bird category.
The reserve is under care of the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department.
