Set high amid the lofty ranges of the majestic Western Ghats, in God's Own Country, Kerala, is the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and Tiger Reserve. Periyar national park has a pictorial lake at the heart of the sanctuary. Constituted with the building of a dam in 1895, this reservoir wanders around the contours of the wooded hills, supplying a lasting source of water for the local wildlife. Although it's a Tiger Reserve, tourists come here to observe the Indian elephants in the act of ablution and playfulness by the Periyar Lake.
