Introduction:
The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala was established as a sanctuary in the year 1950 and as a Tiger Reserve in 1978 and it covers a vast area of 777 square kilometers. The central area of the national park is the Periyar Lake, covering an area of 5,500 hectares. This lake was shaped by the construction of a dam on the Periyar River in the year 1895. The dam submerged the low-lying forests, whose dead tree trunks are still seen projected out of the waters. There are muddy areas with tall grasslands, which are found along the periphery of the lake. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park is located in the hills of the Western Ghats in the state of Kerala in the south-western part of India.
