Fauna in Periyar

Introduction:
The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala was established as a sanctuary in the year 1950 and as a Tiger Reserve in 1978 and it covers a vast area of 777 square kilometers. The central area of the national park is the Periyar Lake, covering an area of 5,500 hectares. This lake was shaped by the construction of a dam on the Periyar River in the year 1895. The dam submerged the low-lying forests, whose dead tree trunks are still seen projected out of the waters. There are muddy areas with tall grasslands, which are found along the periphery of the lake. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park is located in the hills of the Western Ghats in the state of Kerala in the south-western part of India.

About Fauna in Periyar:
The Wildlife in Periyar is a boastful owner of one of the richest habitation of the large mammals. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary provides both incomparable shelter and edibles to the wild animals in the form of juicy grasses and other food stuffs.

The Fauna in Periyar is the best that a wildlife sanctuary can offer to the adventure tourists. The native Fauna in Periyar includes wild animals like the Gaur, the Wild Dog, the Indian Giant Squirrel, the Sloth Bear, the Large Brown Flying Squirrel, the Common Otter, the Wild Boar, the Small Indian Civet, the Nilgai, and 3 other species of deer like the Sambar, the Mouse Deer and the Kakar. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is inhabited by 4 species of primates, which include animals like the Nilgiri Langur, the Slender Loris, the Bonnet Macaque and the scarcest Liontailed Macaque. Apart from all these animals, there are the Tiger and the Leopard residing in the gloomy corners of the forest. But, apart from all the wild animals included in the Fauna in Periyar, the king of the forest is undoubtedly the huge Indian Elephant. In Asia, no other national park can compete with the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park. The Periyar National Park enables the tourists to observe the elephants with much ease and safety.
