Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary

The Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary located in Rajasthan's Alwar District and covering a large area of 800 square kilometers is visited by a large number of tourists each year. This is because it is very conveniently located being close to some of the major cities in the country like Delhi and Jaipur.

In the year 1958, the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary was declared a wildlife sanctuary. Later in the year 1979, it became a tiger reserve under the Project Tiger. The park remains open throughout the year but wildlife lovers should visit it in the summer which is the best season for watching animals.

The topography of the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary comprises of hills and cliffs. What are conspicuously absent are large water bodies. The Siliserh Lake located near the entrance of the sanctuary houses crocodiles but it generally tends to dry up in the summer months when the temperatures touch a high of 49 degrees.

There are grasslands and dry deciduous forests inside the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary. Dhok is the most prominent tree inside the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary. Other varieties of trees are also found inside the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary which includes Tendu, Ber, Khair, Goria and Surwal.

In addition to the tiger there are langur, leopard, chital, nilgai, wild boar, antelope and jungle cats in the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary is the home of the largest number of Peafowl in the country. Other kinds of birds that can be found in the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary are white breasted kingfishers, golden backed woodpeckers, horned owls, drongos, sunbirds, quails, partridges. You may also be fortunate enough to see the peacocks displaying their beautiful feathers and performing the well known shimmering dance.

Other added attractions in the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary are the ruins of the temple of Garh-Rajor that dates back to the medieval period and the castle that offers great views of flying vultures and eagles.
