Wildlife in Sunderban includes many unique and rare species of animals. Wildlife is the primary asset of the forest. They were killed by the Maharajas of India and the British during their expedition in to the forest. But after Independence also they were encroached upon by many, and there was a marked decrease in their number. At one point of time it was found with the help of censor that many species were on the edge of total extermination. Need was felt to preserve these rare and beautiful wildlife and so, National Park were constructed.
Numerous endangered species like Royal Bengal Tiger, Estuarian Crocodile, Olive Ridley Turtle, Ground Turtle and Gangetic Dolphins reside in the Sunderban Delta formed by the Ganga and the Brahmaputra.
Reptiles includes the Sea Snakes, Dog Faced Water Snakes, Green Turtles, Chameleons, Russell Vipers and Monitor Lizards. Apart from these there are also numerous other feral creatures like birds, like Wood Sandpipers, Common Snipes, Coots, Water Hens, Fishing Eagles, Woodpeckers and Cormorants.
