Introduction : The magnificent wildlife of this universe is far too complicated for our primitive minds to comprehend. As we ruin ecosystems, engage in rampant deforestation, their innocent denizens are totally obliterated from the face of this earth. As much as sixty percent of India's wildlife lies outside our sanctuaries and national parks. Protecting these habitats as well as preserving the existing wildlife sanctuaries is a major concern for the ecological security of our country. For instance let us take into account Renuka Sanctuary Himachal Pradesh. Sprawling over an area of 403 hectares, this sanctuary has been notified as Abhayaranya, indicating an ideal landscape for the animals in their natural surroundings where they can move around without any fear.
Renuka Sanctuary Himachal Pradesh is a mixed deciduous forest consisting many sals and climbers. The fauna includes leopard, samber, barking deer, spotted deer, jungle cat, blue jay, black partridges etc. In 1983 black buck and nilgai was introduced to the forest. A pair of lion and a pair of Mithun gifted by Rajiv Gandhi were also introduced later. The area where the lions are kept are fenced to ward off distracting villagers.
