Kochi
The princely state of Kochi had come under the influence
of various empires. The Portuguese, around 1530 A.D.
build it into a prosperous town and build the 'Manuel
Kotta'(Fort Emmanuel). When overpowered by the Dutch,
Fort Williams was built. Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan the
great rulers of Mysore also left their mark here. But
finally in 1814, the whole nation came under the British
rule and Kochi's magnificent monuments and forts had
to face the wrath of the British hegemony. Under the
supervision of Sir Robert Bristow, Kochi was developed
into a major harbor and Willingdon Island was created.
Apart from many commercial establishments the island
accommodates the Cochin Port, Naval Airport and the
headquarters of the Southern Naval Command.
