Kottayam is the headquarters of the Kottayam District in Kerala. The town of Kottayam has always been in the forefront of modern education in Kerala from the nineteenth century but it was in 1989 that it hit the headlines when it achieved the distinction of being the first municipal town in India to achieve 100% literacy. Kottayam is a very tropical area with many Islands and Backwaters. Kottayam is famous for its backwaters. It is very close to the Vembanad Lake, the largest lake on the Kerala backwaters. The heritage resorts in Kottayam are built in the lap of nature away from the din, bustle and pollution of the cities. However, in spite of their rusticity, these resorts also offer modern amenities making them a natural choice for all those who love to stand out from the crowd.
