Formed on 1 November 1982, with the aim of boosting the development process, it is the youngest district in the sate of Kerala. Snuggling to the Western Ghats to its east, it extends up to the low-lying rice fields bordering Alappuzha district on the west, Kollam district on the south and Kottayam and Idukki districts on the
north. The undulating geography of the area has lent it its three natural divisions viz the Lowland the Midland
and the Highland
With more than 50% of its area blanketed by forests,its vast expanses of rural landscape amidst rivers and forests is a treat for the eyes.
August to March is the best time to visit Pathanamthitta as it coincides with annual celebration of various exuberant fairs, festivals and religious conventions that have become one of the major attractions of the district.

By Air: The nearest airport is at Cochin, 152 km away.
By Rail: The nearest Rail link to Pathanamthitta is at Tiruvalla, 30 kms away.
By Road: An extensive network of roads connects Pathanamthitta to other towns in Kerala.
