The cultural capital of Kerala, Thrissur is named after
Lord Shiva, Tiru-Shiva-Pur. Built on the top of a hillock,
its most prominent feature is the Vadakkunathan Kshetram
or the temple which has Shiva as the presiding deity.
The temple is a classic example of Kerala style of architecture.
It was founded by legendary, Parasurama. Thrissur also
has to its credit the biggest church in South Asia, 'Church

Thrissur Pooram festival
The Thrissur Pooram festival celebrated during April-May
is the major cultural attraction in Thrissur. The Elephant
Umbrella competition is worth watching. The elephants
are richly caparisoned and carry ceremonial umbrellas
while they take the deity around the main temple. Tourists
visit in numbers to watch this spectacular festival.
