Bishop built the church as a memorial for two well-known missionaries, Rev. E.B. Russel and Rev. A.B. Sealy. While the former served the Church of England in Travancore-Cochin during 1897-99, the latter was the first Principal of Maharaja's College, Ernakulam and the Director of Education, Kochi state.
