Spread over 777 sq. km area of which the cardamom plantations are also a part, periyar is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Elephants, tigers, leopards, gaur, sambar, Malabar flying squirrel, mongoose, wild pig, can be located in their natral habitat here. 260 species of birds including Nilgiri wood pegion, Blue-winged Parakeet, flycatchers, laughing thrushes are found.

The temperature at Periyar stays between 15 degrees and 30 degree centigrade. Ample rainfalls occeu. The Periyar lake within the sanctuary is an artificial rainwater reserve.

The nearest airports are at Cochin (200 km) and Madurai (140 km). The nearest railhead is at Kottayam. Periyar is well connected by road to Tamil Nadu and Other places in Kerala.
