Places of Interest:
Believed to have existed since the 6th century, the city of Mandu was ruled predominantly by the Muslims. So, for decades there have been strong Mohammedan influences in the architectural styles of all the structures, buildings, palaces, etc.
The Jami Masjid, built in 1454, specializes in the hugeness, the central dome, the small domes and the simplicity of the sculptures. The Mosque of Dilawar Khan, built in 1405, has bold Hindu influences in its architectural styles in the ceilings, columns and the entrance.
However, there are several Jain temples as well apart from the mosques. These are basically dedicated to the Jain Tirthankaras.
Among palaces, the Jahaz Mahal, which was built by Sultan Ghiyasuddin Khilji resembling a sailing ship, was erected originally as a harem for the 15,000 women. Baz Bahadur’s Palace, built by Baz Bahadur in 1509 long before he came to power reflects Rajasthani and Muslim style of architecture.
Rani Roopmati’s Pavilion is an important structure in this city, which was used by queen Roopmati to view the palace of her paramour, Baz Bahadur and the flowing Narmada.
The tombs constructed here are some of the major points of interest in Mandu. Hoshang Shah’s Tomb and Darya Khan’s Tomb are fine specimens exhibiting fine marble and tile work respectively. Hathi Mahal, located just beside the tomb of Darya Khan has pillars resembling elephants’ feet.
Neel Kanth Palace, located beside an older Hindu shrine, was built by Shah Bagdah Khan for the Hindu wife of Akbar the great.
