Good Friday

Introduction to the Good Friday
True to the secular spirit of the nation, Rajasthan celebrates various festivals associated with different religions with a great deal of vigor and enthusiasm. Irrespective of the fact that Hindus comprise the largest share of the population of Rajasthan and Good Friday is essentially a festival of the Christian community, the joy and fervor of the people is noticeable.

History of the Good Friday
It was on this day that Jesus was crucified. Many are prone to wondering that if it was on this day that Jesus was crucified then how is it that it is labeled as Good. It must be a very bad day for it marks his crucifixion. However according to many Christians, the word good actually evolved from the word God, in that case it implied God's Friday.

For many others, good is the right adjective to be used before Friday because in this case it signifies the good gift of salvation - deliverance because of martyrdom. Whatever may be the case, there is no disagreeing that it is a very holy day and consequently it is well celebrated by the people of Rajasthan, more so by the few Christians who live in this royal state. Good Friday also marks the end of the Lent Season.

Description of the Good Friday
There aren't very many Churches in Rajasthan. This is a land best known for its temples. However in those that are there Christians gather to offer their prayers. On the occasion of Good Friday, a ceremonial worship takes place in the churches. In some of them the service continues for three hours because Jesus Christ was also kept hanging on the cross for three hours. While on his cross, Christ is believed to have made seven distinct utterances. Seven distinct elements representative of these utterances are included in the church services.

In some of the churches a cross is also unveiled. It is symbolic of the cross on which Jesus was hanged. The people come to kiss this cross. Believers listen to the mass; the parson narrates to them the sufferings that Jesus underwent for the sake of mankind. A ceremonial burial also takes place though not in all churches.

However it is customary for all Christians to observe fast on this day. It is a way of showing that you are following the ways of the Lord who was also willing to renounce or do self sacrifice for the benefit of the mass. In fact he observed fast for 40 days before he started preaching in the desert. The sounds of the church bells of Rajasthan, India are also not heard. The whole day is devoted only to praying and performance of charitable deeds.

Time for celebrating the Good Friday
Good Friday is celebrated either towards the end of the month of March or in the month of April.
