Introduction to the Id-ul-Zuha (Bakr-Id)
Rajasthan is well reflective of the secular spirit of the nation. Hindu as well as Muslim religious festivals are celebrated here with a great deal of ardor and enthusiasm. Not surprisingly the Muslim population of this state also celebrates Id-ul-Zuha (Bakr-Id), one of the most important festivals for Muslims all across the world with much passion and fervor.
History of the Id-ul-Zuha (Bakr-Id)
The festival is celebrated in commemoration of the great sacrifice done by Prophet Mohammad. According to Muslim religious belief, Allah or God asked Mohammad to sacrifice his son. He loved his son very dearly but to him obeying God was his foremost duty. Suppressing his paternal feelings, he put his son at the altar on Mount Mina near Mecca. He blind folded himself before performing the act of sacrifice. After sacrificing he opened his eyes and much to his joy he found his son standing in front of him. Instead of his son, a slaughtered lamb lay on the altar. From that day onwards, the Muslims celebrate this day as a mark of respect for the faithful and the devout who honor Allah above all.
Description of the Id-ul-Zuha (Bakr-Id)
As in other parts of the country, in Rajasthan too the Muslims sacrifice goats to the Lord or Allah on this particular day. On the occasion of this festival a large number of Muslims congregate at the various mosques in Rajasthan and offer their prayers. They recite the Quoran and exchange greetings with each other. Following this they distribute the goat meat amongst themselves. Part of the festivities also includes cooking of delicacies by
Many Muslims from India also go for the Haj pilgrimage in Mecca at this time.
Time for celebrating the Id-ul-Zuha (Bakr-Id)
